Natalie Christensen

A well known name in the New Zealand Wine Industry, Natalie Christensen is a truly gifted winemaker who holds around 17 years of experience of working across the globe in the industry including France, Spain, USA and right here in her own backyard of New Zealand.

Gaining experience in notable New Zealand wineries such as Saint Clair Family Estate and Matahiwi Estate, as well as being a winemaker at La Cana in Rias Baizas Spain.

With a love and passion for wine, she isn’t your average winemaker. Natalie is trained as a double bass player who holds a Bachelor of Music from Canterbury University in addition to a Master of Science and Graduate Diploma in Oenology.

Named one of the most influential women in wine in the world by the Drinks Business Magazine (UK) in 2018 and has also won the International Wine Challenge’s White Winemaker of the Year trophy in 2023.

International Recognition

Chief Winemaker Natalie Christensen has been globally awarded for her outstanding wines and techniques, from her delicious Pinot Noir to her Sauvignon Blanc's. Natalie received 12 medals and a trophy at the recent International Wine Challenge (2023) which led her to become the very first New Zealander in 15 years to win 'White Winemaker of the Year' which is a massive testament to her.

Natalie has been the Chief Winemaker at Yealands since 2019, since her time there she has introduced many new innovations and some incredible vintages. Her 2021 Single Vineyard Pinot Noir became a true hit and was awarded the 'Best Pinot Noir' at the 2023 London Wine Competition.

2025 Vintage - Winepress Magazine

This year Chief Winemaker Natalie Christensen has a feature in the Marlborough WinePress magazine and shared her thoughts on what might fold out in 2025 within the wine industry here in New Zealand.

Natalie states “Heading into vintage 2025, front of mind is quality, innovation and showcasing diversity within the region”. She emphasizes how important it is to focus on producing quality wines that build on the diversity of varieties and styles that Marlborough can produce.

They also are big advocates for sustainability and holding land guardianship. Trialing new sustainability initiatives to on-going projects of their wetlands, the team have a vision to create nature positive, carbon positive and beautifully biodiverse wines.
